![]() In its 19 th year, 28 countries are now represented by the students of the IJGA. “We do all sorts of training to turn them into not only great golfers, but great human beings as well.” “We educate the kids not only in the classroom, but also on the golf course,” said Kyle Wolfe, Director of Player Relations for the IJGA. Since then, the academy has grown to more than 140 full-time students. White supremacist vigilantes in an alternate future and eldritch monsters in the Jim Crow era lurk on TV in “Watchmen” and “Lovecraft Country.”Īnd “Black Panther,” arguably the most well-known current example of Afrofuturism – a genre described by Womack as “an intersection of imagination, technology, the future and liberation” – is one of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, seen by millions since its release in 2018. Womack explore other worlds and timelines. Black protagonists in stories by Octavia E. Jazz, funk, R&B and soul-infused melodies by Sun Ra, George Clinton and Janelle Monae accompany lyrics describing androids, extraterrestrials and space travel. Roger Sneed, a professor of religion at Furman and self-described “Blerd” – Black nerd – can point to many examples of Afrofuturism in modern culture. ![]() ![]() There probably isn’t much that I can say about the novel that hasn’t been said elsewhere and more eloquently, but it is amazing. ![]() I should note, though, that it wasn’t Freeman’s enthusiasm that intrigued me as much as a variety of related internet comments that suggested that a good film adaptation of Rama was “impossible.” What qualities could make a story a classic book but also make it completely unsuitable (supposedly) for the big screen? I was curious, and reading a synopsis of Rama made me really intrigued. ![]() Clarke’s classic 1972 novel Rendezvous with Rama. Recently, though, my interest was piqued when I learned that actor Morgan Freeman has been trying for years, almost a decade, to make a film adaptation of Arthur C. I also have an instinctive aversion to “hard” science fiction, which focuses on scientific and technical detail. I’ve read very few of the works of the classic authors such as Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, and Bradbury*, and I have many boxes unchecked in my list of “must-read” science fiction novels. I must admit that I’ve never been a particularly avid reader of science fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This fast-paced novel is reminiscent of a Harry Potter adventure, though perhaps not quite as dark as the final books. ![]() They must also battle to save the children of the village from being drowned by the very same Countess. They then must race the mysterious ‘Countess’ and her army of undead soldiers, as well as a troupe of unruly dwarves, to recover the atlas of that time so that they may return to the present day. Unfortunately, they get stuck fifteen years in the past in a much more beautiful version of Cambridge Falls, but at that point the atlas from their time disappears. While exploring their new home, they stumble across a hidden cellar and uncover the Emerald Atlas, an enchanted book (one of three Books of Beginning) that allows them to travel to different points in time through the use of photographs. They are the only children, not just in the orphanage, but in the whole town. They eventually end up at a very strange orphanage in desolate Cambridge Falls, run by an eccentric old wizard named Dr. Still, they behave like typical siblings, teasing each other and being at times pouty or snarky, adding much humour to the tale. ![]() They were taken from their parents as young children for protection and shuffled around to a series of orphanages. Unbeknownst to them, siblings Kate, Michael, and Emma are the children of a prophecy and they each have a destiny to fulfill. ![]() ![]() And then a new family moves in next door and she begins a relationship, first on-line and then very controlled in person, with Olly. It’s the usual fare: a bloodthirsty bear, the ubiquitous escaped mental patient, and a tribe of deranged mountain men. As with most camping trips, everyone is miserable and on edge, so hunky trail guide Caleb suggests a round of campfire stories.
